Together, we will collect essential data for their monitoring: photo-identification, size estimation using laser photogrammetry, behavioral observation, and the creation of individual data sheets to contribute to an unprecedented register of blue sharks encountered in the Azores. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the dives, this workshop is also an immersion in the world of <strong>marine biology <\/strong>and conservation. destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has made over a thousand dives with sharks, including several hundred hours with top predators such as tiger, bull and oceanic sharks, making her one of the most what they really say)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lost in the middle of the Atlantic, the Azores are not a destination you &#8220;cross&#8221;. It&#8217;s an archipelago that you discover, island by island, atmosphere by atmosphere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Made up of nine volcanic islands, this Portuguese archipelago offers an astonishing, almost bewildering diversity of landscapes. Each island is associated with a color, directly linked to its geology, vegetation or history.  A simple way&#8230; to understand a complex archipelago.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udfe1 Santa Maria &#8211; the yellow island<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the driest island in the archipelago.<br>Its color comes from the <strong>yellow broom<\/strong> that covers much of the landscape, but also from its soils, which are older and more eroded than on the other volcanic islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udfe2 S\u00e3o Miguel &#8211; the green island<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The best known, and with good reason:<br>is an explosion of vegetation. Meadows, forests, plantations&#8230;<br>This color comes from <strong>constant humidity and extremely fertile volcanic soil<\/strong>, which allows vegetation to grow everywhere.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udfe3 Terceira &#8211; the violet island<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>More subtle, its color is linked to <strong>lilacs and hydrangeas<\/strong>, but also to the particular nuances of the sky and landscapes at sunset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26aa Graciosa &#8211; the white island<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A softer, almost luminous island.<br>Its color comes from its <strong>light-colored volcanic formations and white clay-rich soils<\/strong>, which contrast with the other, darker islands.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udfe4 S\u00e3o Jorge &#8211; the brown island<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, color is geological.<br>Steep cliffs and &#8220;faj\u00e3s&#8221; (volcanic terraces) reveal <strong>dark brown rocks<\/strong>, shaped by eruptions and erosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd35 Faial &#8211; the blue island<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This blue doesn&#8217;t come from the ocean. It comes from the land. Faial is covered in<strong>blue hydrangeas<\/strong>, which color the roads, the hills and the entire landscape.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf38 Flores &#8211; the pink island<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A wild, wet, floral island.<br>Its color comes from the <strong>rhododendrons and wildflowers<\/strong> that dominate its landscapes.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26ab Corvo &#8211; the black island<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The smallest, the most isolated.<br>Its color comes from its <strong>volcanic caldera and the dark lava<\/strong> that structures the whole island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26ab Pico &#8211; the grey island<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>And finally, Pico. The island is dominated by Portugal&#8217;s highest peak, a volcano that seems to emerge directly from the ocean, at 2,351m above sea level. Here, color is radical.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 solidified lava<br>\ud83d\udc49 volcanic flows<br>\ud83d\udc49 ubiquitous stone<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The landscapes give the impression of a land still in formation. But this black rock has also been domesticated: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The vines grow in lava fields protected by low walls of black stone, a UNESCO World Heritage site.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>adapted agriculture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>architecture shaped by the volcano<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Pico is not just an island. It&#8217;s a direct confrontation with the origin of the world. It&#8217;s a raw, mineral, intense island.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These landscapes may seem wild today, but they have been deeply marked by man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not least through an activity that has shaped the entire local culture: <br><strong>whaling.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div centuries, the Azores have lived to the rhythm of the whales. And one species in particular: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 sperm whale<em>(Physeter macrocephalus<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2693 An artisanal hunt&#8230; but extremely organized<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Contrary to the industrial image one might have elsewhere, Azorean hunting was <strong>coastal and artisanal<\/strong>. Ella began in 1867 at Lajes <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was based on a precise system:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Lookouts (on land)<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Observers were posted on high ground. As soon as a blast was spotted, a signal was sent to the village. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Whaling boats (at sea)<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Long, narrow boats with oars and sails set off immediately. Each crew numbered around 6 or 7 men. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. The hunt itself<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Harpooning was done <strong>by hand<\/strong>. A harpoon was launched directly from the whaleboat, at very close range. Recovery and processing<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Once dead, the whale floated. It was towed to shore.  On land, everything was used and transformed in dedicated factories.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udee2\ufe0f A global industry: why whales were so precious<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The sperm whale was not hunted for its meat, but for its by-products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Main uses :<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Whale oil<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>lighting (lamps)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>industrial lubricant (machinery, mechanics)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>manufacture of soap, margarine, candles  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spermaceti (in the sperm whale&#8217;s head)<\/strong>:<br>\ud83d\udc49 a highly sought-after substance<br>used for high-quality lubricants and premium candles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ambergris (intestinal concretion of the sperm whale)<\/strong>:<br>\ud83d\udc49 very fragrant substance, solid and oily, used in perfumery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bones and teeth<\/strong>:<br>\ud83d\udc49 objects, crafts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Organic residues<\/strong>:<br>\ud83d\udc49 flour to feed animals or fertilize soil  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 Nothing was lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Azores exported these products to Europe and America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a long time, this industry was <strong>a major economic pillar<\/strong>, particularly on Pico, Faial and S\u00e3o Miguel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcc9 Why the hunt stopped<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Several factors led to its decline:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Industrial replacement<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Whale products have been replaced by petroleum and synthetic lubricants, making the business less profitable.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Population decline<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Global overexploitation has drastically reduced cetacean populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. International pressure<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1980s, under the influence of international agreements (when Portugal agreed to support the International Whaling Commission&#8217;s moratorium on commercial whaling) and European policies, hunting was gradually banned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Azores, it ceased for good in <strong>1986<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd04 A rare (and successful) reconversion<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike many other regions of the world, the Azores have managed to <strong>transform this history<\/strong>. An elegant, curious, magnetic species. Discreet at first glance, but widely distributed around the globe. SHARK: THE ATLANTIC&#8217;S PELAGIC ELEGANCE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The blue shark<em>(Prionace glauca<\/em>) is one of the most emblematic sharks of the open ocean.
