Maldives Liveaboard – Deep South: an expedition to the heart of the wild and pelagic life

Set off on a diving cruise to the Maldives, in the extreme south of the archipelago, where the ocean expresses itself in its rawest form.

Set course for Huvadhoo (Suvadiva) atoll, reputed to be the deepest in the country and one of the best pass diving spots in the Maldives. Here, dynamic conditions (strong currents, nutrient-rich waters) attract exceptional pelagic fauna. Drift dives at emblematic sites such as Viligili offer spectacular scenes: grey reef sharks, eagle rays, schools of barracudas, hunting jacks… a veritable concentrate of marine biodiversity.

There’s more to this Maldives Deep South cruise than diving. Between dives, enjoy snorkeling sessions on unspoiled coral reefs, in areas rich in coral and tropical fish. At nightfall, enjoy a rare experience:watching whale sharks from the boat, attracted by the plankton concentrated under the lights, a moment as magical as it is unpredictable.

The itinerary continues to Fuvahmulah, a mythical, world-famous destination for shark diving enthusiasts. This isolated island is home to one of the highest densities of tiger sharks in the world, with several hundred individuals identified. The dives here are intense, deep and reserved for experienced divers: tiger sharks, thresher sharks, oceanic mantas… each dive is a powerful encounter, or a surprise, often unforgettable.

This diving expedition in the Deep South of the Maldives is aimed at certified divers (Advanced level or equivalent) looking for an immersive, educational and awareness-raising experience. More than just a trip, it’s a different approach to diving:

  • understanding species behavior
  • learn to observe without disturbing
  • develop a more conscious view of the ocean

Lectures on the environment and the marine fauna of the Maldives, daily exchanges and an introduction to tiger shark photo-identification enrich the experience. A professional videographer also accompanies the cruise to document and enhance these unique moments.

Margaux

A marine biology graduate, professional diver and underwater cameraman, Margaux has built up her experience of diving with sharks all over the world!

She is a naturalist guide and shark seminar leader, specializing in human-shark interactions, and accompanies groups of divers on shark encounters in a dozen different destinations.

She has made over a thousand dives with sharks, including several hundred hours with top predators such as tiger, bull and oceanic sharks, making her one of the most experienced divers of her generation.

She is one of the few divers to have practised tonic immobility on sharks: the first woman in the world to have achieved this in South Africa using the Walter Bernardis technique.

She fights to promote quality ecotourism around sharks by involving local communities.

Anthony

A dive instructor, naturalist and expedition guide with extensive experience at sea, he specializes in creating enriching encounters with the ocean and its most emblematic species. His work is rooted not only in adventure, but also in education and conservation.

Over the years, he has guided divers through some of the world’s most extraordinary marine environments, from the coral reefs of the Maldives to the volcanic seamounts of the Azores and the richly biodiverse waters of the East African coast.

As a multilingual naturalist (French, Italian, English, Spanish), he brings a unique perspective to every dive, helping divers combine the pleasure of exploration with a better understanding of marine life, ocean dynamics and conservation issues.

Its aim is not only to offer safe, unforgettable experiences, but also to develop respect and responsibility for the ocean.

Camille A.

Mario C.

Diving with sharks used to be on my bucket list. Diving with Margaux and Anthony turned into a life perspective shift. Their ability to combine marine biology, conservation, and pure emotion is rare. You don’t feel like a tourist , you feel like part of something meaningful.

Emily P.

On sent l’engagement derrière chaque mot.

sophie j.

Martine S.

I was honestly nervous before my first shark dive. Anthony and Margaux’s briefing changed everything. They explain not only what to do, but why. Understanding the behavior made the fear disappear.
A memory I’ll never forget!

🌊 The Maldives: a scuba-diving paradise

The Maldives are often associated with white sandy beaches and turquoise waters.

But beneath the surface, the archipelago reveals a very different reality.

The Maldives is one of the world’s top destinations for tropical scuba diving, thanks in no small part to its unique atoll structure. These coral formations create a multitude of environments: reefs, passes, lagoons and drop-offs, each home to a specific fauna.

This diversity allows us to alternate between :

  • coral-rich dives
  • drifting in the passes
  • encounters with large pelagics

👉 A rare variety in a single destination.

🌍 An ideal geography for biodiversity

The Maldives archipelago is made up of over 1,000 islands spread over a chain of atolls.

These atolls function as open ecosystems, influenced by ocean currents.

Result:

  • constantly renewed water
  • a high concentration of nutrients
  • exceptional biodiversity

This dynamic attracts a wide range of fauna, from reef fish to large predators.

🦈 Diving in the Maldives: between coral reefs and large pelagics

Diving in the Maldives is distinguished by its ability to offer two complementary experiences.

On the one hand, rich and colorful coral reefs.
On the other, encounters with emblematic species of the Indian Ocean.

On the same stay, it is possible to observe :

  • gray shark walls
  • more than a dozen species of shark: zebra, tiger, bull, great hammerhead, whitetip, silvertip, blacktip, oceanic blacktip, spinner, nurse, thresher…
  • eagle rays
  • schools of jacks and barracudas

And above all…

👉 encounters with iconic species.

🐋 The stars of the Maldives

Some species make the Maldives a must-see destination:

  • the reef manta ray, observed on cleaning stations, or the oceanic manta ray observed in the blue.
  • the whale shark,
  • dolphins, regularly visible on the surface

These interactions take place in a natural setting, often dictated by currents and different cycles (feeding, reproduction…).

🌪️ Passes: the heart of the action

Dives in the passes (channels between the atolls) are among the most spectacular.

This is where :

  • currents concentrate life
  • predators gather
  • scenes become dynamic

👉 These are drift dives, often intense, but extremely rich.

🐠 A beautiful marine biodiversity

Beyond the large animals, the Maldives offer an incredible wealth on a smaller scale.

Coral reefs are home to :

  • tropical fish
  • moray eels
  • clownfish
  • nudibranchs
  • shellfish

Each dive can be different, even on the same site.

This diversity makes it possible to combine :

👉 macro observation
👉 hunting scenes
👉 coral landscapes

🌊 A fragile ecosystem

Despite this richness, coral reefs remain vulnerable.

Global warming, coral bleaching and human pressure are impacting these environments.

That’s why a responsible approach is essential:

  • good buoyancy
  • respecting distances
  • no intrusive interaction

👉 Diving also becomes an act of awareness-raising.
